Have you ever heard of prayer cards? What are they and what is their purpose? Are they cards that you pray with? Well, I’m here to set the record straight and explain exactly what these things are.
First of all, you do not need these to pray. You can hold on to them as with any object during prayer but it not a necessity. Prayer cards are 4.25″ x 2.5″ in dimension and have some kind of religious figure on the front of them. Typically, these can be seen at Catholic ceremonies but you will also see them distributed in other denominations as well during a memorial service.
The back of the prayer card contains an imprinted prayer, poem or message. It’s not required that it be a prayer on the back of the card since they are called “Prayer” cards. Some families opt to imprint a special message on the back, and that is perfectly acceptable. There isn’t any hard and fast rule that it needs to contain a prayer of some sort.
The modern prayer cards today do not contain a religious figure on the front but rather a picturesque background of flowers or outdoor landscape. I actually prefer them since they are very attractive and can be used for non-religious ceremonies as well.
The purpose of prayer cards is a giveaway the family or host wants to provide guests as a remembrance of the honoree or event. It is convenient in size and can be placed inside a wallet or purse. Handy, just handy, and people love that. It is a kind of token of remembrance that enables you to personalize by adding a photo of the honoree and their name. Most finish the card by laminating it which leaves for a longer lasting keepsake.
